Children, aged 5-11, are now eligible to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Similar to results from adult vaccine clinical trials, vaccination was nearly 91 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 among children aged 5-11 years. In these studies, vaccine side effects were mild, self-limiting, and similar to those reported in adults and with other vaccines recommended for children. The most common side effect was a sore arm. The Food and Drug Administration granted full approval to the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine on Monday, August 23, 2021. This action marks the first transition from an emergency use authorization to full licensure for a COVID-19 vaccine. The Pfizer mRNA vaccine has been approved for two doses, administered three weeks apart, in people aged 16 and older. It remains available under emergency use authorization for adolescents ages 12 to 15. The public should be very confident that this vaccine meets the highest standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing that the FDA requires of an approved product. The CDC recently updated their mask guidance for fully vaccinated individuals. Due to the increasing prevalence of the highly transmissible Delta variant, fully vaccinated individuals should wear masks in indoor settings in areas where the virus is spreading. This guidance is applicable for nearly two-thirds of all U.S. counties. The Delta variant is currently an estimated 10 percent of COVID-19 cases in America, but the CDC warns that it could become the dominant strain in the months ahead. The same variant is spreading rapidly in the United Kingdom and has quickly become the dominant strain there. Currently, it accounts for more than 90% of infections in England and may be the reason for COVID-19 surges there. However, there is good news: a recent study from Public Health England showed two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine were 88% effective against symptomatic disease from the Delta variant compared with 93% effectiveness against the Alpha variant.
